Statement on the arrest of Denis Arao while covering Local Council elections in Lira City, Uganda

We are concerned about the arrest of tndNews, Uganda, News Reporter, Denis Arao. Denis was arrested on Tuesday, July 28 by men in uniform while covering Local Council Chairpersons’ Elections in Lira City East Division.

Denis was arrested for taking pictures as fracas between some voters, candidates; their agents and some security officers started.

As he took pictures, he was surrounded by a group of security officers who arrested and drove him to Ireda Police Station, where he remains in detention.

GLCSMS condemns this arrest, and calls on all media institutions, journalists and human rights bodies to demand for Denis’ unconditional release.

Journalism has never, and will never be a crime.
