GLCSMS strongly condemns the brutal assault on Lira-based journalist Bob Oyuku Ojok

With the 2025-2026 political environment looking sensitive and volatile, we urge all Members of the Fourth Estate covering political rallies to remain professional, non-partisan and alert to any dangers targeted at them.

The Great Lakes Centre for Strategic Media Studies (GLCSMS) has issued this statement to strongly condemn the violent attacks on 97.7 Unity FM Journalist Bob Oyuku Ojok on Thursday, November 20, 2025, while carrying out his journalistic duties.

We understand that Oyuku was covering a political rally in the Boke area of Lira City when he was accosted and physically assaulted by unidentified individuals alleged to be supporters of a political group.

This unacceptable treatment is not only an attack on an innocent media professional but a direct violation of press freedom, democratic values, and the safety of journalists in Uganda heading into the 2026 general elections.

We would like to inform the perpetrators of this unfortunate development that journalists play an essential role in promoting transparency, accountability, and setting ideas for public participation in matters pertinent to a nation. Violence or intimidation directed at journalists or media houses will continue to undermine these roles and threaten the foundation of a free and democratic society.

The growing trend of hostility targeting journalists, especially during politically sensitive periods, is deeply concerning and must be addressed with urgency.

The Great Lakes Centre for Strategic Media Studies calls upon the Uganda Police Force to promptly investigate this incident and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable in accordance with the law. Political actors and their supporters must respect journalists and guarantee their safety during public events, regardless of political differences.

Media houses, civil society organisations, and all defenders of free expression must remain united in advocating for safer working conditions and the protection of journalists across the country.

Attacks on journalists must end, and Uganda cannot aspire to democratic progress while those entrusted with informing the public continue to face threats and violence.

With the 2025-2026 political environment looking sensitive and volatile, we urge all Members of the Fourth Estate covering political rallies to remain professional, non-partisan and alert to any dangers targeted at them.
